New Lewes/Brighton constituency is Tory Marginal with Labour in second

September 19, 2011 6:52 am 5 comments

If the new boundary commission changes go ahead, it looks as though The proposed  Lewes and East Brighton seat will be a Tory marginal based on the voting figures from the last Local elections results. On May’s results in wards included in the new seat: Con 13700, Labour 9000, LibDems 6500, Greens 5800, so Labour become the main challengers and if you want to defeat the Tories then you will need to vote Labour. This will be a massive turn [...]

New constituency boundaries

September 17, 2011 5:09 pm 0 comments

The Tory-led government as you may know wants to reduce the number of MPs to around the 600 mark.  This is supposedly to save money and make constituencies with equal numbers of voters.  What it will do in part is give less say and power to ordinary people and more power to the executive bides of Parliament like the cabinet and Prime minister. Its worth checking the boundary commission report here  that now places Lewes and some rural areas to [...]

Putting Lewes First

September 15, 2011 1:06 pm 0 comments

Labour Members continue to work hard in our communities from Lewes FC, School Governors, Ringmer and Newick Village Halls to Baxter’s field and Bonfire  The difference with Labour is that we are not riding bandwagons to success our members are for Lewes and the surrounding villages first, they are quietly active in the community because Labour has always believed in the community. We know councillors like to blow their own trumpet because they want you to elect them next time. [...]

This Land is our Land

They were saying its all over, and the forests were safe, but they aren’t and it isn’t. Our ancient woodlands and forests are part of our heritage – but the Tories want to sell them off. Changes to the Public Bodies Bill, which is currently going through Parliament, will give ministers the power to sell off 85 per cent of our forests – with no protection for public access or biodiversity. Labour is leading the fight against the plans in Parliament. [...]

The Badger Cull – ‘Can it’

September 12, 2011 3:11 pm 0 comments

What do you do when you need to make an important decision? Most people look at the facts available and base their decision on them. That’s why it’s all more the shocking that the Tories and Liberal Democrats have decided to proceed with the culling of badgers – against both the scientific evidence and the weight of public opinion. Bovine TB is a terrible disease that last year led to 25,000 cows being put down. The trouble is that that [...]

Are the Greens divided in Lewes

Its a simple enough question, with a lead Green Councillor: Matt Kent leaving the Green Party fold to become an independent.  We have to ask why he felt the need to leave after being committed to the green cause.  What would so put him off, what would divide the Greens.  In Lewes they seem to have a habit of losing councillors or people leaving. Perhaps they will offer some transparency on these matters? Matt has his own web site that [...]

There is no place like home

You may have heard the news that under this Tory-led Government, there has been a 17% increase in the number of families losing their homes. These aren’t just dry statistics – they are real families facing homelessness.  The Government must change course, stop cutting too far and too fast and come up with a Plan B for the economy – before more people lose their homes. Help us send that message by signing the petition
